A Few Words About Baby Birds :)

Baby season is upon us again, and now injured and orphaned baby birds in our care can have a cozy place to recover thanks to Wildlife Rescue Nests (https://www.facebook.com/wildliferescuenests/). Registered Volunteer Penny Whiting from Wildlife Rescue Nests crafted several dozen cozy nests of all sizes for our young wild patients. Thank you Penny!

As always, we do prefer to keep baby birds with their parents so they can learn to be healthy, wild birds. If you find a bird that is out of its nest that is not injured or truly orphaned, we recommend getting the bird back into its nest or into another nest structure so that the parents may still care for it. Please see this website with information on nestlings, fledglings, and surrogate nests for more information. https://theiwrc.org/resources/emergency/north-america#subtitle3-identifier

Check out this website and Facebook page for more information about her studio and events.  She can be commissioned for pet portraits, children's portraits, landscapes, and more!

RELEASE! Barred Owl Returned to Palisades-Kepler

What an exciting week it has been for The RARE Group!  We have another release to share with you!

This owl was found at Palisades-Kepler State Park shortly before Halloween.  He had head trauma and was having trouble gripping with its feet.  Our RARE volunteers hand-fed him until he could eat on his own.

He was well enough to be transferred to the flight cage around Thanksgiving, and since then, has made great progress.  We returned him to his home on December 9.

Thanks to all who support us and make releases like this possible.

Enjoy this sweet video!

Another RELEASE to Celebrate!

photo by Cari Redondo What better way to spend a frigid, snowy December day than releasing a Great Horned Owl?

This owl's release was certainly cause for celebration, as she was found at the Center Point, Iowa truck plaza off Interstate 380 nearly 3 months ago, on September 14.  She came to us emaciated and demonstrating some neurological issues, possibly as a result of West Nile Virus.

We are so thrilled to share this video of her return to the nature, following her long road to recovery!  Enjoy!

I CARE for RARE On Facebook, we've been counting down to #GivingTuesday.

Today is also the day before our 1st Anniversary. :)

In this last year, we've admitted 169 animals into our care; 110 raptors and 59 non-raptors - and each was attended to with our experience and expertise, at an average cost of ~$100 per animal.  That $100 pays for food, medicine, medical supplies, rent, and insurance.  Our time and talent is all donated with love.

If you're interested in helping us celebrate our first anniversary, one way would be to help us with a monetary donation that will help us care for these important, marvelous animals.  If you can help in this way, please see this page - it has a link to our PayPal, or our mailing address if it works better to send your donation.

Monetary donations are not the ONLY way to help The RARE group!  This week, we've highlighted a number of ways to help:

On Thursday, we thanked our volunteers - and we welcome new volunteers!

On Friday, we mentioned our agreement with Stuff, Etc.

On Saturday, we debuted our "I CARE for RARE" jars.

On Sunday, we explained how to use Amazon Smile.

Yesterday, we asked for your to consider matching the $1000 gift that will help organizations learn about raptors through our upcoming education programs.

Do you have questions?  Please don't hesitate to contact us!

THANK YOU so much for your support and encouragement - we are grateful to be able to help raptors and other wildlife and in turn, the greater world we live in.

This is a photo of the eagle being held for treatment. As you see, welder's gloves, a welder's apron, and a welder's helmet keep the RARE handler safe!
